Wool
The award winning wool produced at Avington is pearly white, lustrous and soft handling with good crimp definition. Our rigorous selection criteria include staple strength, fleece weight, length, low coefficient of variation (CV) of fibre diameter and nourishment.
Avington produces two luxurious wool lines.
SUPERFINE The micron range of the Avington Superfine is 15.0-17.0
EXTRA ULTRAFINE The micron range of the Avington Extra Ultrafine is 11.0-13.5. This wool is the ultimate luxury fibre grown at Avington.
Measurement, recording and provenance
Avington’s thorough electronic data collection and recording methods mean fleece quality and traceability is assured.
All ewes and rams are physically classed and assessed annually against strict criteria to ensure we are producing the wool that Avington’s customers demand.
During shearing in October a Laserscan is used to measure the micron and weight of all fleece, so that the specialist wool classer can accurately build specified lines of wool. A full history of each animal is updated and maintained, aided by electronic eartags. This information is printed on a bar code and kept with the shorn fleece when classed until it is pressed into the bale. This process ensures traceability of every fleece.

Strategic alliances
Avington has developed experience in recent years in alliance contracting for wool supply because we hold the view that strategic alliances are a better way for woolgrowers to connect with customers. Avington’s customers include retailers, manufactures, processors and wool brokers. Strategic alliances can also ensure product provenance is fully understood and traceable.
